Coconut oil can be a one ingredient and cost effective solution to your skincare needs.  It is well known not only for its ability to boost the immune system and increase metabolism but also for its ability to soothe and moisturize the skin.  It is widely used as an ingredient in natural skincare products but can be just as effective all on its own. It is truly a one stop shop.

Coconut oil is a fat which acts as an emollient to soothe and soften the skin.  Applied directly to the skin it may appear a bit greasy initially but it is quickly absorbed into the skin leaving behind no greasy residue. It produces a deep and real moisture that will soothe itchiness and dryness.

Many commercial moisturizers include water which can make your skin feel soft initially but as the water dries so will your skin. These commercial moisturizers can also be very pricey and they use many synthetic ingredients. Anything applied to your skin is absorbed directly into your body leaving you exposed to these foreign toxins. Fortunately and alternatively coconut oil is an all natural ingredient that can be safely eaten or applied to your skin and hair.

Coconut oil is rich in antioxidants which help fight the onset of wrinkles.  The antioxidant Vitamin E protects skin cells from damage over time. It also promotes the repair of damaged skin and minimizes scarring. Coconut oil is also a rare source of lauric acid which is highly regarded for its antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal properties.  This makes coconut oil an effective treatment for skin conditions caused by bacteria such as acne.  Its antimicrobial properties also eliminate body odor caused by bacteria making it a favorite ingredient in natural deodorants.

Using coconut oil for your skincare needs is much safer and more cost-effective than the pricey store-bought moisturizers available.  Always buy virgin unrefined coconut oil to ensure you are receiving the highest quality of oil for your skin.  Refined oils have been bleached and deodorized and are of a lower quality.  Remember what you apply to your skin is absorbed directly into your body.  For more about the health benefits and labeling of coconut oil read Coconut Oil-101.

Here are a few ways to take in the benefits of coconut oil in your self-care routine:

  • Apply directly to the skin after washing face morning and night. A little goes a long way.
  • Apply to the ends of hair and leave in as a repair treatment and to de-frizz
  • Beach scented body lotion.
  • Massage Oil.
  • Mouthwash – Oil Pulling.
  • After shave – apply directly to body after shaving
  • Eye makeup remover (apply a small amount to eye and wipe gently with cotton ball) This is by far my favorite eye makeup remover, it’s gentle and wipes away easily.
  • DIY Lotion Bars/Sticks
  • DIY Lip Balm/Gloss
  • DIY Deodorant
